In a previous article, we explored what real-world leadership looks like in Zimbabwe’s current environment. Today, we take a closer look at five traits we’ve observed in leaders who are not only surviving but helping their businesses and people thrive.
Here’s what sets them apart.
1. Practical Optimism
Leaders in Zimbabwe don’t have the luxury of blind positivity but those who succeed tend to be optimistic in a realistic way. They acknowledge challenges while actively seeking solutions. They inspire confidence, not by ignoring difficulties, but by framing them as opportunities for innovation or growth.
2. Agility
With fast-changing regulations, inflation pressures, and shifting customer behaviour, agility is no longer optional. Strong leaders pivot quickly whether it’s restructuring a team, entering a new market segment, or adapting financial plans. They plan for scenarios, not guarantees.
3. Empathy in Action
Real leadership requires listening, especially when employees are dealing with rising costs, family pressures, or burnout. Empathetic leaders build trust by being accessible, fair, and responsive to people’s realities. This trait often results in stronger retention and a more engaged workforce.
4. Financial Discipline
In uncertain times, financial stewardship is a leadership skill. Those at the helm must understand cost structures, prioritise essential spending, and safeguard the business with appropriate risk cover from insurance to compliance. They also ensure their teams understand the “why” behind tough financial choices.
5. Long-Term Thinking
While short-term firefighting is sometimes necessary, forward-looking leaders carve out time to think beyond the crisis. They invest in people, processes, and partnerships that will pay off in the long run, such as succession planning, technology adoption, and sustainable business practices.
At Minerva, we support many of these leaders as they navigate risk, protect assets, and empower teams. Leadership in Zimbabwe isn’t easy. The leaders making a difference are those combining resilience with vision and empathy with execution.
